This unprepossessing piece of public art lurks outside the toilet block by the Brewery Arts Centre. I walk past it almost every day on my way home from work, but I've never bothered to look at it before....
It dates from the '70s and is a replica of the 4th-century "Hare Mosaic" found in Beeches Road in 1971.
In 2013 the mosaic drew a brief flurry of attention when Wildmoor Properties submitted its plans for the revamp of the Brewery Court area. For a moment it looked as if the hare was about to be swept away. David Viner protested, but had to admitted that the piece was in a bit of a sorry state. Now it seems the threat of redevelopment has receded and, with it, any lingering interest in the mosaic.
