This weekend's adventure is a reprise of the other Sunday's walk, this time taking the footpath back from Stratton Mills to Bowling Green which we failed to find before. Today both the boys are in tow.

The farm buildings next door look like they were once lived in as well, but they are fast going back to Nature.
On the return leg, the field behind Berry Hill Crescent has all sorts of lumps and bumps from old quarrying activity. An archaeological survey, carried out here in 2016, uncovered Iron Age pottery. There is also the remains of a ditch which supplied water to the Roman town or perhaps to the Abbey, which acquired the "Leatherwell spring" in this area in the 13th century. Not much information is to be had about the quarrying which is described as "modern"; Beecham, writing in the 1870s, refers to "Bowling Green" and "Bowling Green Pits" as sites of debris from disused quarries.
