The chapel belonged originally to the nearby Oakley Hall Preparatory School and was built in 1919 as a memorial to the headmaster Mr Haskoll, and 48 old boys of the school killed in action in the First World War. The stone slab on the wall outside still records their names.
After 1945 a further 44 old boys were added to the roll call of the war dead.
The school itself closed in 1994 and Oakley Hall, the Victorian mansion which housed it, has been turned into posh apartments, with the Oaklands development in the grounds. (You can't even get close enough to the house to take a photo without trespassing.) The chapel remained in the care of a trust until 2011, when it too was sold off.The family responsible for the initial conversion work in 2013 posted this video on YouTube:
People often tell me that you can't preserve everything, but I can't help wondering what those who lost their sons would have thought of this? Better converted and loved than neglected and demolished, I suppose.
