This pair of 17th-century cottages in City Bank Road are the remains of the old Langley Mill. The right-hand cottage has changed hands fairly recently - but the owners obviously care about its history, to judge by the DIY information board (photo below).
I remember the building as atmospherically ancient, with overgrown gardens, but today it seems a bit newly shaved and over-exposed.
However, this is a still a magical place. There has been a mill here since Domesday, probably long before, and a river crossing literally from time immemorial. Today, in the sunshine and quiet, you feel that eons pass in the blink of an eye......
My Mills & Milling in Gloucestershire book has the entry:
Langley's/Bramble Mill: ?Corn mill, after 1540. Last working, c. 1820?
