Jacobean Worlds Remembered

This used to be one of my favourite shops in Cirencester.  Peering through the window was like staring into some long-lost Jacobean hall full of dark carved furniture, faded wall-hangings and pewter plates.  Sadly the Mr Stokes and his partner have both now died and the business is closed.

My Buildings of England book (Vere, 1970) describes the premises:

Dollar street:  On the r., against the abbey wall, some attractive late 17c gabled house; Nos 2-4 of stone,  Nos. 6-8 picturesquely restored, roughcast, with canted first-floor oriels.

The property was recently for sale, so you can see photos of the ancient interiors.
The William H. Stokes Collection was sold in March 2019.
