Tar Barrows

There are two massive late Bronze Age round barrows [or "Tar barrows"] just minutes from our house.  This is the best preserved - in the field opposite the Burford Road Garage.

Aerial photographs and a geophysical survey have revealed the vestiges of a significant Romano-British ritual site in the surrounding fields. I read that this would have been the obvious site for the  town of Corinium but the Romans preferred to leave the existing occupation in place.

When I came here a few days ago it was bright and sunny but today it is deserted and overcast. The veil feels a bit thin: there is too much dead wood;  I'm starting to worry who is buried here....

Here is the second barrow next to the Tar Barrow Cricket ground:

The pitch is always immaculately tended but I've never seen a soul here.....Think I'll definitely head on home......
