The Civic Society are always supportive of the restoration of the historic buildings in the town, some of which were owned by some of the most prominent and wealthiest families in the town. The mid-18th century Mead House on Thomas St was the long-time home of the well-established Cripps family, perhaps especially associated with the banker and antiquarian Wilfred Cripps. The side wings were added around 1889, one of them as the family‘s private museum for Roman remains, long ago absorbed into the Corinium Museum. The society added a blue plaque to the property’s wall to acknowledge this historic connection. In 2023 planning consent was granted to convert the building back to residential use and Adrian Zareba, one of the developers behind the project, will be speaking at the Cotswold Homes and Interiors Festival at 1pm on Sunday 22nd March at the Corn Hall in Cirencester. He will be explaining the renovation and design process which should be a fascinating opportunity to hear about the complexities of returning a listed property of this size back to its original use as a home.
