91 Cheltenham Road is the old turnpike house which used to stand at the junction of the roads out of Cirencester towards to Gloucester and Cheltenham. It was dismantled and re-erected in its present location in the 1880s.
The road from Cirencester to Gloucester via Stratton was turnpiked as early as 1747. In 1812-13 it is recorded that the Salutation tollgate (named after the Salutation Inn in Albion Street) collected £175. Following the creation of the Cirencester United Roads Trust in 1825, the gate also served the new turnpike road to Cheltenham.
